The 2007 Gaelic Lionesses

In no particular order:

Adele EnglandWith super velcro hands and a mean kick, Adele is going to feature in the nets this year. Lets hope the players will be distracted by her cool blue look and miss altogether. Helped by team mates telling her who is not on her team, after a large ladies night out, but not sure will the opposition be so hung over on the day. Who cares, good luck to ya if you can get a ball past Adele.
Anne-Marie DohertyJoins Hedges in modeling the blue / grey some what "so last year" Gaelic lions outfit on a weekly basis (lets hope it gets the odd wash along with the bibs?). Whizzes around the track, even when complaining of a stitch - was that due to alcohol or water this time? Normally connected to the diplomatic core, but seen to give Megan a few very "undiplomatic" digs on the pitch.
Becs GaughanScientific experimenter by day, socialite by night. The vodka cranberry seems to be a favorite but indeed landed our Becs in a spot of "am I bothered" recently.   New to all sports this year, and frankly not too bad, but can she bend it like Beckham in the crucial minute? No contest. Rumored to be married, but is that just to Totenham Hot Spurs.....
Bláthnaid MacNamaraProbably the only member of the club that can actually speak decent Irish when sober. Recently had a break off the social scene, and "literally disappeared", but made a brave come back last week by starting off with reading a dirty poem to the ambassador. Lets hope he didn't understand the words. One of the organizing committee for hosting the games this year, in charge of - you guessed it - the social committee...... A very true reflection of her priorities in life- the craic!
Catherine O'Leary4am Newton Murtabach supporter following the odd bottle of vino and a few songs when jerry has packed up. Great player and ardent GAA supporter. Catherine will take anyone out, solo up the pitch and slice the ball in to goal, but can she get back for the next ball following the 60 fags from the night before? Of course...but she'll have to play in mid for a while whilst the rest of us enjoy the break.
Claire Dinsmore"Fingers" or lack of them. The red gloves are the latest tactic to end the tournament will more fingers than she started. Has spent most of the season playing with just 3 fingers, and one ankle after a massive drop of two steps outside Mollies (had to be carried off), but its always good to see that you are supporting our sponsors.... think you are supposed to be inside buying....
Elein ThompsonOur youngest player by an upsettingly large margin, this Lioness is skillful, fast and deceptively strong. Bypassed the Cubs very quickly to take her rightful place on the Ladies A panel last year.
Gillian HayesA recent arrival to the shores of Singvegas, Gillian had amassed more friends in about 2 days than most of us managed in a couple of years. Always smiling and becoming a fierce defender, this Lioness is one to watch!!
Grace ChenGrace is fit, fast and fabulous. Hare's around midfield, forwards or defense with equal ease. New to the Game, but taken it up with no problems at all!! Quiet on the Social side of late, but we are looking forward to having her out and about with the rest of the team!!!
Helen FridellInternational transfer from Japan Ladies, we are delighted to have Helen's skill to add to the Lionesses… Rumour has it she is organising a Boat Race between the Lionesses and Japan Ladies at the games…..Clearly focuses purely on Football!!
Janet McSwineyHanded over the reigns as captain to Nats this year, but is still a major motivator and example to all the Lionesses. A favourite of all, Janet (jazz hands) McSwiney married the coach last year in vain attempt to gain an easy ride through the season. Plan has seriously back-fired and now finds herself getting more abuse than the rest of us... (quite a feat!!). Still, always ready with a smile and great advice this is one Lioness who roars only when she's run out of Vodka, Lime & Soda
Kami-Kay ValentineStuns the Ladies frequently with inappropriately named stretches post training. Always ready to sink a beer or two in the name of the team and has great drinking songs. A fierce Defender, very little gets past this lady on the pitch. Great motivational team-member. Always fun to have around
Kellie WebsterThis is Kellie’s first year playing with the Lionesses. Perfect attendance on nights out, eventually this year she cracked and joined the ‘playing’ fraternity. Comment of the year had to have been Kellie, at her first training session, bouncing the ball, and (imagine Australian accent) quote “Jees, this is weird, I’ve never bounced a round ball before” unquote. Australians and their ovals!! Despite regular attendance at training it’s hard to imagine a more natural position for Kellie than in a bar somewhere with a pint in hand.
Majella FoleyAnother newcomer to the Lionesses, Majella’s after wearing out more than a few defenders chasing her heels. Doesn’t she know she’s not supposed to show up her team-mates in the first year at least? It’s only courtesy for feck sake. And that left foot…it’s unusual to see Ty and Edel flinching in the goal, but there you go. We’re all expecting to see a toasted and roasted (but relaxed) Majella at the games as she’ll be sipping Pina Colada’s on the beach on Phuket the week before the Games, but will definitely be concentrating on strategy and tactics for the week (that what she told us anyway Jon and Bryan!) We hear a rumour she is returning to London shortly after the Games but we’ll wait to see…
Marti CrosbieA veteran of the Lionesses Marti, been on more trips this year than Mark - the likes of San Diego, New Zealand and a few trips just up the road to Bangkok to see the cousin and buy up every handbag around her. Legs 11 on the pitch soloing up and down with ease. Ryan is soon to be following in mum's footsteps and is , lets face, by far the best looking supporter we have!!! In charge of the transport on the organizing committee this year....will our guests arrive at the correct destination or will Marti send our opponents the long way round to the Polo Ground via Sentosa? Go on...I dare ya.
Maybelle TanAll was going well at training this year until Maybelle started her warm-down stretches one particularly sunny Singapore evening. Stunned gasps from the fellow Lionesses, can you actually stretch that far? Can you actually bend your back like that? Is she inside out? Jesus, doesn’t that hurt? Etc etc. An inspiration to us all that yes, yoga does work, we might have to tack it onto our training regime next year. Maybe a Maybelle Twist to go with the Janet Specials? This flexibility must come in useful for the mayhem of the Singapore Sale eh Maybelle?
Megan GraffA stalwart in defence Megan is after coming up trumps again this year. Responsible for coining the ‘helicopter defence’ it ensures there ain’t no-one going through Megan unless they want to get chopped into little bits. We hear Megan has franchised her defence strategy and we can expect to see it on the Croke Park catwalk later in the year being modelled by the Gaelic natives as Megan whirlwinds her way through her homeland of Canada, staying an average of two and a quarter hours in every city. Why? Don’t know? Ask Megan. Once you make it back to Singapore again Megan!
Melinda SmithAnother newcomer to the Singapore Lionesses Mel has joined at the opportune time in the eyes of many. No balling and roaring from Jon, no clatters/bruises/dents from friendly fire (aka ‘team-mates’ tackles). No gruelling punishment from Denise (even if it is good for us). Just the Games and a cartful of craic! Mel, if you can apply this stealth of tactic to the Gaelic field the Games will be in the bag!
Mireille CoutureTouch rugby coach extraordinaire (Margareita anyone?), Mickey has no problem transferring the skills to the Gaelic pitch. A key component of the ladies B sqaud in '06 combined with outstanding singing skills/stamina at the end of tournament bash last year makes this lioness a great addition to the team - the conical bra can probably be left for Sentosa though...
Natalie PrinceCaptain supremo Nats has taken over the reins from Captain Hedges this year and has ensured that all the lionesses are a lean mean playing unit ready to take on anyone at the polo club. Great captain - really encouraging to new players and manages to look after a child, and Zara (sorry Daz!) too while still having time to run around a pitch never looking tired - even after a game of hockey (hockey - like hurling but not half as fun / violent)
Rachel CavanaghRachel started well this year - she came to training! Was showing great promise and sporting some swanky football boots but has unfortunately fallen foul to a knee injury which will see her sidelined for the games. Still, this Lioness is sure to be on there shouting for the rest of the lionesses - looking glamorous as ever.
Rachel CoxThe Kerry contingent has missed a bit of training recently - something about an ankle, or has she in fact gone home to personally transport Tayto back to Singapore? One of the most social Lionesses this year Rachel is sure to be fighting fit again come end June to claim her spot on the team and the dancefloor at the post games celebrations
Rachelle DugganRachelle is back this year after taking some time off last year to expand the Duggan clan. Don't let this lionesses beaming smile fool you - she will trample you on the pitch - even if she has been out till 4am the night before! One of the most kind-hearted lionesses Rachelle is the greatest Gaelic football export to come out of the Philippines in many a year
Rania BurnsNew to football this year, this lioness is probably fitter than most of the rest of the squad put together! Hailing from Canada and having played sport since she could walk Rania is a formidable force on any pitch be it gaelic, rugby or whatever you are having yourself. There will be no stopping this Lioness once she gets the ball and runs
Siobhan CarmodyThis lovely Limerick lioness is a consistently strong performer. Creatively deceptive, Siobhan can carry on polite chit chat with her opponent, whilst dishing out fierce one-on-one defense mid conversation! She is a hostess extraordinaire .... who's guests are often struck down with monumental hangovers. Has largely managed to escape the wrath of the coach this year ... favouritism perhaps?
Suky RajuJudging by her speed and sharp tactical play, there's no evidence at all that Suky enjoyed a longer off season than most this year. When not cruising around the pitch, this skillfull midfielder can be seen cruising around town in some impressive 80's get up.
Tai MatlaTai resumes her position a goalie this year after a stint further up the park last year. She has a gigantic kick out and an even more colossal vocal box! Amoung her many party tricks is arm wrestling to boys in the middle of the pub - rumour has it she hasn't lost a match up yet. Unusually obsessed with the word "Marcaíocht".
Terri HarwoodTerri is newcomer to the Lionesses this year. She has really made an impact this season, both on the field and at the bar. Though she's been known to take exotic trips away with mysterious men in preference for training (who wouldn't?!) she has developed into a fierce defender and a great addition to the team.
Tessa McGovernTessa is our lightling fast, high-scoring forward who creates havoc up front and a nightmare for the defenders. She is as quick with the bottle as she is the the boot. A party girl beyond compare ... whether it be Barbie Doll parties, keg parties or all night bar hopping, she's there all the way. If she can score a goal for every drink she consumes, victory will be ours!
Tracy ClemmerThis fitness freak also doubles as our club Secretary. She can be found most Sunday mornings at a race or run of some description…crazy gal! She may not be joining us on the pitch this year but will certainly be sidelines testing the beer out on our behalf.
Jon CarmodySongwriter, Photographer, Blockmaker-extrordanaire & artiste in general, Coach Carmody has stepped up again this year to coach the Ladies. Many said he was mad altogether, and perhaps they were right. Doing an even better job this year. Still, manages to find plenty of time for roaring, shouting, general abuse in abundance. Loves giving out.
Jamie MorrisroeThe team will certainly be quieter this year without our resident Californian babe, Jamie "Mav" Morrisroe, who will miss this year's games. We still love her anyways!
Denise StevensonThis party-lovin' girl will unfortunately not be playing at the Games this year. A usually consistent and fierce defender, she's unfortunately been more consistently on the physio bench this year than on the pitch. She will certainly be at the games though to support the team and no doubt lead them astray with pitches of icy margaritas on the ready!
Denise GlennonReturned to the team with a vengence early in the season, then mysteriously told us she was too "busy" to commit to the team. Little did we know there was a junior Triathlete on the way!!! Since announcing the happy news, we have realised why Fitness Training is so hard that it has almost made several Lionesses cry... Denise Glennon has been excercising vicariously through both the Ladies and Men's teams!! That's alot of excercise. Amazing Fitness Coach, has done an incredible job. Always smiling, always fun... we can't wait to meet the new arrival.
Denise GalvinWas kept incredibly busy at last year's games as our team Physio… and is doing great business out of the Lions! Another member of the team sidelined due to an impending arrival… though methinks she had no intention of playing anyway!! Prefers Champagne Brunches to training any day of the week. Don't we all!!
Bryan McSwineyCoach McSwiney is new to the Ladies this year, and we're big fans. Possibly naively thought we wanted to play football, and didn't get last year's memo about Lionesses beging a generally sedentry bunch, who only go to training for the trip to Dempsey's afterwards. Also loves giving out.
Aileen LaneWill be sorely missed at the Games, and not only for her skills on the pitch. Always keeps us up to the minute style-wise, and always keeps us entertained with antics any Lioness worth her salt would be proud of.
Kellie McManusKellie has been massaging her way through the season rather than training especially hard. Recently berothed, we awaited the reveal of the sparkler for many a long week… and it was worth the wait. Hopefully the treasurer didn't spend Gaelic Lions funds on it!!!
Teresa RyanA veteran Lioness, Teresa captained the now famous, "5-in-a-row" Ladies B team last year. Leading by example she played on with injury. This year Teresa has taken a break from playing football and is the head Coach of the Gaelic Cubs… Rumour has it, she has done such a good job that the Cubs could well out-play the Ladies this year!!
Maggie ChanMaggie is great fun. She always brightens up the pitch-side craic at the games with a pitcher of beers and a few tricks!! Never one to train especially hard….she's more of a social butterfly.
LornaThis hockey convert took to Gaelic footy like a duck to water. At least, that's what the field was like the week Lorna joined us for the Blitz! We then had to convince her mud wrestling was not part of the game! Onerous hockey commitements has prevented her full scale participation this season ... but we'll all be campaigning to change that round next year.
